U.S. National Under-17 Team Tops Switzerland, 5-1, at 2011 Vlad Dzurilla Tournament

Five Players Score for Team USA

PIESTANY, Slovakia - Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill.) collected a goal and an assist, as the U.S. National Under-17 Team topped Switzerland, 5-1, here today at the Piestany Ice Arena in its opening game of the 2011 Vlad Dzurilla Tournament. Five players scored for Team USA and twelve U.S. players recorded a point in the win.

"The team played well once they became familiar with the rink and got their legs moving," said Danton Cole, head coach of the U.S. National Under-17 Team. "We positioned ourselves well and need to follow up with another good game tomorrow."

Team USA opened the scoring 6:24 into the first period with a goal by Matthew Lane (Rochester, N.Y.). The U.S. then took a two-goal lead when Cameron Darcy (South Boston, Mass.) struck with less than three minutes remaining in the frame for the eventual game-winning goal. Matteau and Henrik Samuelsson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) assisted on the tally.

Switzerland scored the lone goal of the second period to cut Team USA's lead in half, but Matteau notched a power-play goal just 1:35 into final stanza to put the U.S. ahead, 3-1.

Ryan Hartman (West Dundee, Ill.) followed with a shorthanded goal at the 8:28 mark and Riley Barber (Livonia, Mich.) added a goal with 4:24 remaining in regulation to lift the U.S. to a 5-1 victory.

Collin Olson (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 23 saves in the win for the U.S., while Luca Boltshauser stopped 28 shots in the loss for Switzerland.

Team USA next faces Germany tomorrow (Feb. 12) at 6:15 a.m. EST at the Piestany Ice Arena.
