U.S. National Under-18 Team Outscores Russia, 10-4, in Five Nations Tournament Victory
Bardreau, Boucher, Grimaldi and Haggerty Pace Team USA with Three Points Each
HRADEC KRALOVE, Czech Republic - Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.), Reid Boucher (Grand Ledge, Mich.), Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) and Ryan Haggerty (Stamford, Conn.) paced the U.S. National Under-18 Team with three points each in a 10-4 victory over Russia today at Hradec Kralove Arena. This was Team USA's second contest in the Five Nations tournament.
"It is not often we beat a quality opponent like Russia 10-4," said Scott Monaghan, senior director of operations for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. "Our challenge now is to come prepared to play the host country, the Czech Republic, on national television tomorrow."
Team USA opened the scoring when Blake Pietila (Brighton, Mich.) collected his own rebound, circled around the net and lifted the puck over Russian goaltender Artem Artemjev for the tally. Haggerty and Bardreau registered assists on the play. The U.S. took a two-goal lead when Grimaldi broke free in the neutral zone and ripped a shot into the net. Russia responded before time expired in the first, but Team USA led 2-1 heading into intermission.
Boucher scored short-handed at 3:04 in the second period from Grimaldi and Connor Murphy (Dublin, Ohio). Russia answered to climb within one goal before Grimaldi, on the powerplay, put Team USA back up by two scores. Boucher and Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) collected assists on the play. Boucher scored his second goal of the game, another U.S. powerplay marker, putting the U.S. ahead 5-2. Less than a minute later, a turnover caused by Tyler Biggs (Cincinnati, Ohio) led to a breakaway goal by the forward and Bardreau followed that score with one of his own. Russia would add a goal before the end of the period, but Team USA controlled the game, now up 7-3.
The U.S. continued its offensive outburst on yet another powerplay strike, this one by Biggs at 4:01 of the final frame. Haggerty and Michael Paliotta (Westport, Conn.) combined to assist on the score. Just 52 seconds later, Haggerty found the net for his own tally and third point of the contest. Pietila earned the helper as Team USA enjoyed a 9-3 lead. Russia notched a powerplay goal midway through the third but the U.S. was too far ahead for any comeback bid. A late goal by Bardreau gave Team USA a 10-4 victory over Russia.
Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) earned the victory for Team USA, while Artemjev was in goal for Russia in the loss.
Team USA next faces the Czech Republic tomorrow (Feb. 11) at 12:00 p.m. ET. The game will be held at the Hradec Kralove Arena.
