2011 Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships Set to Begin Tomorrow in Eagle River, Wis.
NBC Sports to Capture Action for Hockey Day in America; Olympic Silver Medalists Erika Lawler and Jinelle Zaugg-Siergiej to Attend Event
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The sixth annual Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships are set to begin tomorrow (Feb. 11) on Dollar Lake in Eagle River, Wis. A record 250 teams will play in approximately 480 pond hockey games on 24 outdoor rinks created on Dollar Lake during the three-day event, which runs through Sunday (Feb. 13).
NBC Sports will be on hand to capture the action for its programming during NBC's Hockey Day in America, taking place on Sunday, Feb. 20, as part of the fourth annual Hockey Weekend Across America, presented by Reebook.
Highlighting the event will be apperances by 2010 U.S. Olympic silver medalists Erika Lawler and Jinelle Zaugg-Siergiej. On Saturday evening, they will be featured as special guests for the tournament's welcome reception, held at the Eagle River Derby Track at 5:30 p.m. CST.
Since the first Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey National Championships in 2006, the event has grown from just 42 to 250 teams featuring nearly 1,750 adult hockey players from across the country. In 2009, the tournament's widespread reach was recognized, when it received SportTravel Magazine's 2009 SportsTravel Award for the best amateur single-sport event. This year, the teams hail from the District of Columbia and 25 states, including Arizona, California, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina, with the majority coming from Illinois and Wisconsin.
Throughout the weekend, the squads will compete in 15 divisions, including three on the women's side. The game format will include a two-minute warm-up, followed by two 15-minute periods. Preliminary games will be played on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST, with the semifinals and championship games held on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST.
