Public support for PyeongChang 2018 continues to rise

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, 31 JANUARY 2011: A new regional poll has revealed that public support for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games bid continues to increase.
The poll, conducted by a Gangwon regional newspaper, Gangwon Ilbo, highlighted that 95.2% of the people surveyed in the Province are backing the PyeongChang 2018 bid and want the Winter Games to come to Korea for the first time in the country's history. The figure of 95.2% is an increase on the 93% of regional residents who pledged support to the bid in a 2009 poll. The new poll was conducted by phone over the course of four days from 28 to 31 December 2010. 500 residents living in Gangwon Province took part in the poll.
In addition to widespread public support, a host of private companies are joining together to help promote PyeongChang's bid across the country. The Council of Private Organisations for the PyeongChang 2018 Bid is a new national committee with members that represent a broad range of Korean industries including broadcasting and transport. The committee is chaired by Ki-young Uhm, PyeongChang 2018 Vice-Chairman and former president of MBC Broadcasting, a national Korean broadcast network. To help encourage further support for PyeongChang's bid, the committee will use its member networks to showcase the bid and collect one million signatures from the public, highlighting the nation's ongoing commitment to hosting the 2018 Winter Games.
Yang Ho Cho, PyeongChang 2018 Chairman and CEO, said: "It is wonderful to hear that PyeongChang's bid for the 2018 Winter Games is supported by so many people in Gangwon Province and across the country.
"Korean people would be honoured to welcome the Olympic Family and winter sports fans from around the world to enjoy the Winter Games, and this amazing level of public support provides great encouragement as our campaign heads to the 2018 Host City decision in July.
"Korea is passionate about winter sports and our bid can spread important Olympic values to a new part of the world and help a young and dynamic population in the Asian continent connect with the spirit of Olympism, and inspire a new generation of winter sports athletes."
