Outstanding sites and an Organisation second to none: Annecy 2018 show they've got what it takes at Kandahar 2011

Alpine ski world cup - Kandahar 2011

As a curtain-raiser to the IOC Evaluation Commission's visit, the legendary Les Houches "Green Run" in Chamonix, Annecy 2018's proposed venue for the Olympic alpine skiing events, played host to the world's greatest skiers this weekend, and took the opportunity to welcome technical teams from Sochi 2014 who had travelled over to gain an insight into French expertise.

Alongside Annecy 2018's team of Champions, Charles Beigbeder, President of Annecy 2018, and Jean-Pierre Vidal, Vice-President of Annecy 2018 and 2002 Olympic Slalom Champion, were present at this legendary event in the international alpine skiing calendar, in Chamonix, one of Annecy 2018's proposed showcase venues for the Games.

On the victory podium, Charles Beigbeder presented the trophy to race winner Didier Cuche, who won the race in1'58''91, in front of a crowd of 15,000 cheering fans, there to encourage their champions in an atmosphere of fun and festivity.

"Kandahar 2011 is an absolute must on the winter circuit", said Charles Beigbeder, after the race. "We had all the right conditions today for an extraordinary sporting experience. An outstanding venue, a perfect piste, snow… and sunshine. What more could you ask for? The atmosphere was tremendous. And it's fantastic for the entire Annecy 2018 team! Knowing that we are backed by all these supporters gives us that extra boost to pull out all the stops and bring the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games home."

The event's organisers are renowned on the international scene for their expertise. Indeed, this has led to cooperation agreements being signed, with a view to sharing French expertise. Accordingly, Annecy 2018 today played host at Kandahar to a delegation of technicians from Sochi 2014, headed by the Deputy Mayor of Sochi, Irina Romanets, keen to take advantage of all Les Houches has to offer in terms of its expertise in the fields of tourism and hosting major international sporting events.

"It's such a pleasure for us to come and talk with our French friends about issues such as tourism and organising elite sporting competitions", said Irina Romanets, Deputy Mayor of Sochi. Les Houches has a magnificent skiing complex and the organisation is extremely robust. We wish Annecy 2018 all the best for the forthcoming selection process."

The Kandahar 2011 event is the biggest skiing competition to be organised on the Annecy 2018 playing field during the Olympic bid. With just a few days to go before the IOC Evaluation Commission's visit, from 9th to 12th February, it provides a unique opportunity for Annecy 2018 to give the world of winter sports a preview of the 2018 Annecy Games.
