International Sports Press Association (AIPS) to host Power of Sport Awards, World Fair Play Awards, and Sports Integrity Symposium in Olympic capital, Lausanne

AIPS to host two awards and a symposium in Lausanne

LAUSANNE, January 24, 2011 - The International Sports Press Association (AIPS), headquartered at Maison du Sport International will organise a number of high-profile events in Lausanne this week.
For the first time in its 86-year history AIPS will inaugurate a special award, the AIPS Power of Sport Award, at a gala ceremony to be held at the Beau-Rivage Palace hotel on January 27. IOC President Dr Jacques Rogge will attend the gala.
Inspired by the words of the great Nelson Mandela who at the very first Laureus World Sport Awards gala in Monaco in 2000 said: “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to unite in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination,” the AIPS Power of Sport Award will recognise three very special people who through sport have made an impact on the world, their countries and their immediate communities.
Three AIPS Power of Sport trophies will be presented at the World Fair Play Awards gala ceremony at the Beau-Rivage Palace hotel on January 27. In conjunction with the Committee for International Fair Play (CIFP), AIPS has taken on the role of organising this year’s World Fair Play Awards ceremony.
Joining AIPS as main sponsor of the event is the World Lottery Association and European Lottery Sport. The City of Lausanne and Canton de Vaud will also partner AIPS, and the International Olympic Committee has given its support.
“Sport is a vehicle for peace and understanding. As journalists we see countless examples of men and women, who do not necessarily have a   high public profile, but who are making a positive and lasting impact on their society through sport. The AIPS Power of Sport Award will   recognise three of these special people in Lausanne, the home of sport,” said AIPS president Gianni Merlo.

Symposium: “Sports Integrity - Illegal Betting, the Real Threat”
The World fair Play Awards gala will be preceded by a symposium to be opened by IOC President Dr Jaqcues Rogge in the Olympic Museum at 9am on January 27.
More than 150 delegates have registered for the AIPS-organised symposium including international journalists from 65 nations, representatives from leading international federations,  experts from sports betting agencies and watch-dog organisations. The symposium will discuss illegal sports betting, an issue which has been referred to as “the biggest threat” to sport.
Among the expert speakers will be Thomas Spöring, FIFA EWS Manager Competition Analysis and Communication (Switzerland), Risto Nieminen, World Lottery Association President (Finland), Christian Kalb, Management Consultant,Sports Betting expert, EL(France), Alexandre Fourtoy, UEFA, Director of Communications (Switzerland),  Patrick Lemoine, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, L’Equipe (France), and Andrea Monti, Editor-in-Chief, La Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy).
The symposium is supported by the World Lottery Association (WLA), European Lottery Sport (ELS), the City of Lausanne and Canton de Vaud.
