Latest ZDF poll reveals vast majority of Germans back Munich’s bid

Munich, 17 January 2011: Just five weeks before the IOC Evaluation Commission visit, a new poll from national broadcaster ZDF has given a timely reminder of the growing support and momentum gathering behind Munich 2018, with 75 percent of respondents backing the Bavarian capital's bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The survey from ZDF, a highly respected barometer of public opinion, comes at the perfect time for Munich 2018. Confirmation that the nation is uniting behind the bid will add real weight to Munich 2018's promise of a truly unforgettable Winter Games spirit, just as the Bid Committee prepares to welcome the Evaluation Commission on 1 March. Munich 2018's vision is of a global Festival of Friendship celebrated passionately in full stadia and in atmospheric fan zones up and down the country. With three-quarters of the country in favour of the bid, and just 16 percent against, Munich 2018 is convinced it can deliver on its pledge.
Katarina Witt, Chair of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, said:
'We are delighted with the latest results showing 75 percent of Germany is supporting our bid. We see this as confirmation of the unparalleled enthusiasm for winter sports in our country, and we will be building on that enthusiasm throughout our packed calendar of winter sports events this season. We are now looking forward to the IOC Evaluation Commission visit in March. We are eager to welcome our guests to a nation of sports fans all keenly anticipating the decision in July that could see Munich hosting a Festival of Friendship in 2018.'
Munich 2018's plans for developing the region and making it an even more attractive environment for its citizens, for tourists and for businesses, are a key factor behind the rising support for the bid. Significantly, the major investments in eco-friendly infrastructure detailed in the recently published Candidature File would ensure a greener future for Munich and Bavaria. The recent show of public backing is a welcome addition to the unequivocal political support Munich 2018 enjoys from every level of Germany's government.
