Young people strap on their skis on Annecy 2018's playing field

Schools come to Semnoz, Annecy 2018's proposed venue for the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events, to discover the joys of Nordic and Alpine skiing

As a part of Haute-Savoie's innovative public policy to make sports and the mountains accessible, the Haute-Savoie General Council has been developing the "Savoir Skier" (Learning to Ski) programme for the past five years, aiming to introduce young people to Alpine and Nordic skiing. Nearly 9,000 local schoolchildren took part in the programme this year.

This Thursday 6thJanuary 2011, three middle schools came to Semnoz, Annecy 2018's proposed venue for the freestyle skiing and snowboarding events, to discover the joys of Nordic and Alpine skiing. The Haute-Savoie General Council - a public partner of Annecy 2018 - launched this initiative to make skiing more accessible, thus demonstrating the region's commitment to sports.

"Our commitment to encouraging young people to take part in sports and our dedication to making our mountains more accessible have guided our public policy for many years now! With such an exceptional natural setting, sports and outdoor activities are second nature for us! That's what we're going to show with Annecy's bid for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games" says Christian Monteil, President of the Haute-Savoie General Council and Chairman of the Annecy 2018 Supervisory Board, who was at Semnoz this Thursday 6th January to cheer on the participants.

This project is perfectly in line with Annecy 2018’s commitment to promoting sports in Savoie Mont Blanc, to training elite athletes and to hosting major sporting events in the region. The project is led with youth in mind and aims to raise their awareness of the fundamental values of sports and their mountain environment.

The Annecy 2018 bid has placed young people at the heart of its project, with the aim of sharing this wonderful playing field and giving their hopes and expectations a voice, so that they, too, can have an opportunity to become the athletes of tomorrow…and the champions of 2018!
