"Everything still to play for"

A press conference about the Annecy bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games was held on Wednesday 15th December 2010 at the Maison du Sport Fran├žais in Paris.

Chantal Jouanno, the French Minister for Sport, Denis Masseglia, Chairman of the French NOC, French IOC member Guy Drut, Christian Monteil, Chairman of the Annecy 2018 Supervisory Board and President of the Haute-Savoie General Council, and Jean-Luc Rigaut, Mayor of Annecy, reaffirmed Annecy 2018’s ambitions, following the departure of Edgar Grospiron as CEO of the bid.

All of the key players confirmed their intentions to see the bid carried through to July 2010, with full commitment to its success. Reasserting support from the State, the Minister for Sport declared: “Impossible isn’t French. It’s a matter of national commitment. The State is 100% behind the bid. We have six months to do an excellent job. If there's a clear strategy, we will find the resources to make it happen.”

Denis Masseglia spoke of the determination of all those involved, beginning with the athletes who are Annecy 2018’s foremost ambassadors: “Everything is still to play for. We’re here to tell you about a bid that we hold dear. It’s an excellent bid, which brings us all together. We always wanted it to be led by athletes, and we intend to give it an even stronger identity through our champions, who are ambitious and fully committed.”

“The city of Annecy has always believed in the bid," added Jean-Luc Rigaut, Annecy’s mayor. “Our athletes and our citizens are all involved. This bid is built on values shared by the city, the valley of Chamonix and the region of Savoie.”

Guy Drut reconfirmed, on his own and Jean-Claude Killy’s behalf, that “commitment from the two IOC members is total and absolute, in support of Annecy.” Support which goes beyond this bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games: “We have a presence and a tradition to maintain, a message to communicate. We believe that it should be normal for France, through a city, to bid to host various European and World championships, and Olympic Games too."

Following the announcement of the new organisation at the start of January, upcoming events for Annecy 2018 include the submission of the bid book on 11th January 2011, followed by the IOC evaluation commission’s visit in February 2011.
