2010 Athletes of the Year to be Announced on Monday, Dec. 20

CHICAGO (Dec. 16, 2010)—U.S. Soccer has announced the final four
winners of the 2010 Best of U.S. Soccer Awards. The winners of Best
Assist, Best Soccer Bar, Best Soccer Blog and Best Studio 90 Feature
were presented on Studio 90, concluding three days of awards
announcements by ussoccer.com.

The ninth annual installment of the Best of U.S. Soccer Awards was
decided entirely by fan ballots cast from Nov. 22 to Dec. 10 on
ussoccer.com.

U.S. Soccer fans voted Jozy Altidore’s assist to Michael Bradley in
the 82nd minute of the U.S. MNT’s World Cup game against Slovenia on
June 18 as the Best Assist of 2010. The assist, which earned 37
percent of the vote, and eventual goal, helped the U.S. equalize the
game 2-2 and continue on their World Cup run in South Africa. Coming
in second place with 23 percent of the vote was Mikkel Diskerud’s chip
into the path of Juan Agudelo. The deft piece of skill produced a
game-winning goal for the U.S. MNT on Nov. 17 against South Africa.
Third place for Best Assist went to Jermaine Jones for providing a
perfectly weighted ball for Jozy Altidore on Oct. 9 in Jones’ U.S.
national team debut against Poland (13 percent).

“I want to thank the fans and everybody who voted for me,” said
Altidore speaking on ussoccer.com’s Studio 90 from his home in Spain
where he accepted the award for Best Assist. “This award means a lot
to me, especially since the goal was in the World Cup. It's really
exciting.”

“We were trying to get a goal from anybody, and I thought the
mentality of the team was pretty good,” continued Altidore while
describing the match against Slovenia. “It was amazing how we were
able to come back in that game, and we all learned a lot about each
other that night.”

Fans went to Official U.S. Soccer Bars in 2010 because they were the
best spots to follow the U.S. National Team during the successful trip
to South Africa, and voted on which bar provided the best atmosphere
to cheer for the U.S. Taking the top honor for the first time was
Small Bar in Chicago with 22 percent of the vote. Small Bar, with
multiple locations in the Windy City, has made a big impact on the
soccer scene in Chicago and recently hosted U.S. MNT Captain Carlos
Bocanegra for a Studio 90 taping at its location on Division Street.
Coming in second with 20 percent of the vote was O’Brien’s Pub in San
Diego, an established destination for soccer fans in Southern
California. Rounding out the top three Best Soccer Bars was a bar
nicknamed “The Church” by its regular patrons and a perennial Best Bar
nominee, Nevada Smith’s in New York City (13 percent).

Introduced in 2007, Best Soccer Blog has fast become one of the most
popular categories in the Best of U.S. Soccer Awards. This year was no
different, with a spirited nomination and voting process spanning the
better part of the last two months. Despite the competition, Soccer by
Ives again took the top spot with 30 percent of the vote, marking a
hat trick for the New Jersey-based blogger Ives Galarcep. The award
for second place went to first-time nominee Dirty Tackle (24 percent).
The site hosted by Yahoo! is a one-stop shop for soccer news from
across the world. The WNT Blog hosted by ussoccer.com was voted to
third place in the standings (10 percent), marking the third time in a
row the official blog of the U.S. Women's National Team has finished
in the top three.

Taking home the top award for Best Studio 90 Feature was the behind
the scenes look at Landon Donovan’s experience on loan to Everton in
England (18 percent). Coming in second with 16 percent of the vote was
Daily Show correspondent John Oliver’s visit to the U.S. MNT at
Princeton during the team's pre-World Cup training camp where he gave
his best attempt to shake up the team ahead of their match with
England. Third place for Best Studio 90 Feature went to Stuart
Holden’s tour of the Irene Country Lodge (15 percent), looking at the
ins and outs of the USA's base camp during their stay in Irene during
the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

With the 2010 Best of U.S. Soccer Awards now concluded, U.S. Soccer
will announce the winners for the 2010 Athlete of the Year Awards on
Monday, Dec. 20. The four awards include Male, Female, Young Male and
Young Female Athletes of the Year.  As the oldest and most prestigious
awards of their kind, U.S. Soccer’s Athlete of the Year Awards date
back to 1984 for the men and 1985 for the women. As in years past,
online votes for the annual award were tallied and counted for 50
percent of the total, while the remaining 50 percent was compiled from
members of the national media and U.S. Soccer representatives,
including national team coaches and members of the U.S. Soccer Board
of Directors.
