FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
World Cup season is in full swing on the Annecy 2018 playing field
Savoie Mont Blanc has been showcasing French organisational expertise for major sporting events since the first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix in 1924.
After Alpine Skiing at Val d'Isère and Skeleton at La Plagne, the mogul run at Méribel - where ice hockey and women's Alpine Skiing events were held during the Albertville Olympics - was the place to be for Freestyle enthusiasts this Wednesday 15th December, hosting a World Cup event in the spectacular and technically challenging discipline that is mogul skiing.
Savoie Mont Blanc, which has been showcasing French organisational expertise for major sporting events since the first Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix in 1924, played host to a mogul skiing World Cup event at Méribel. This event once again demonstrates our region's desire and ability to host international winter-sports events, where athletes can compete in the best conditions for their comfort and performance. It is a key commitment for the Annecy 2018 bid, which guarantees that 80% of the athletes taking part will be housed less than 10 minutes from their competition venue if Annecy is awarded the 2018 Winter Games on 6th July 2011 in Durban.
"Freestyle skiing first became an Olympic discipline right here, at the Albertville Olympic and Paralympic Games," declares Florence Masnada, double Olympic medallist in Alpine Skiing and Annecy 2018 ambassador. "The variety of these disciplines, which originated or were developed in the Savoie Mont Blanc region, is an illustration of our desire to give everyone, athletes on ice or snow, a chance to pursue their passion in the best possible conditions at the heart of the French Alps. "
"It's always a joy to have a World Cup event in France. There's a warm welcome and the organisation is flawless. If Annecy is awarded the 2018 Winter Games, it will be a wonderful gift for the athletes, with the opportunity to have a unique experience in our mountains," adds Guilbaut Colas, member of the French mogul skiing team, World number two in the discipline, winner of Wednesday's event in Méribel and one of Annecy 2018's champion supporters.
Antoine Dénériaz, Olympic Downhill Champion and Annecy 2018 sporting ambassador, came to encourage the mogul skiers and congratulate Guilbaut Colas for his superb performance on behalf of the entire Annecy 2018 team.
