MUNICH 2018 WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND
Bid Committee lifts festive spirits in Munich's snow-clad city centre
Munich, 13 December 2010: The Munich 2018 team took to the Bavarian capital's snow-carpeted streets this weekend to spread its Festival of Friendship to the city's millions of holiday season visitors.
Over the next month, Munich will welcome over three million visitors from around the world, all coming to enjoy a unique winter wonderland. Traditional Bavarian warmth and hospitality will fuse with the city's vibrant multiculturalism to offer a taste of the global celebration of sport awaiting the Olympic family at an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Munich in 2018. The Bid Committee shared its Festival of Friendship with the world this weekend, as a city-wide branding campaign kicked off with Munich 2018 gifts given out all over Munich.
Chair of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, Katarina Witt, was as excited as anyone to be experiencing the magic of Munich in wintertime:
'We are delighted to be welcoming the world to Bavaria this festive season! It is a fantastic opportunity to share our wonderfully diverse traditions and to embrace cultures from all over the world. Our international guests are enjoying the friendly, carnival atmosphere that is synonymous with the city and its people. Bavaria's proud heritage of warmth and hospitality would provide an unforgettable backdrop for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018.'
20 'Christkindlmärkte' (Christmas markets) around the city will be offering food, drink and festive spirit, and Munich's world-famous Tollwood Festival will be a particular draw. The festival celebrates tolerance, multiculturalism and openness through cultural events including concerts and drama. Ecology is another major theme, with prominent guests leading environmental debates and market stalls selling exclusively hand-crafted products.
Another winter tradition guaranteed to instil some festive spirit is the 'Eiszauber' (Ice Magic) skating rink on Karlsplatz, which will offer thousands of visitors the chance to enjoy winter sports in one of Munich's most iconic settings. Rischart, a Munich 2018 retail partner, has produced a 20.18 metre-long Christstollen, a traditional German Christmas cake, that will be given to visitors to the rink. Munich 2018 sports ambassador and Olympic Champion figure skater, Manfred Schnelldorfer, will be teaching children to skate and sharing his winter sports experiences with budding 'Katarina Witts' throughout the holiday season:
'It is great to be able to use my passion for winter sports to inspire young people who visit the 'Eiszauber'. But with Munich 2018, we aspire to so much more: our dream is to share the values of Olympism on a truly global platform. Young people in Germany have never experienced a Winter Games in their home country. We hope to stage a Festival of Friendship for the next generation of winter sports stars and for the Olympic family in 2018. The atmosphere in the city right now proves just how magical that would be.'
As well as once again proving itself a world-leader in staging safe and friendly multicultural festivals, Munich's host city credentials will be further bolstered by the latest improvement to its already world-class transport infrastructure. Munich 2018 was present at the official opening of the Moosach U-Bahn (underground) station this weekend. Situated just outside the Munich Olympic Park, the new station will shorten the journey time between the international airport and the proposed venue for Munich 2018's Ice Park.
