Olympians Assemble in Seoul for WOA Asia-Oceania Congress

Olympians from around the Asia-Oceania region gathered in Seoul for the 2nd World Olympians Association Asia-Oceania Olympians Congress.

The Olympians Congress took place on November 29th and 30th, under the leadership of WOA President Dick Fosbury (USA), with the cooperation of Korean Olympians Association President Sun-Chon Song and IOC Member Dae Sung Moon (KOR). The Korean Olympians Association hosted and organized the event.

With near perfect attendance of existing member countries from the Asia-Oceania region, along with addition of several pending members, delegates discussed Olympian activities in their countries. The Olympians Congress was declared a great success and left the region with a blue print for the future.

One important action of the congress was the discussion of a regional Olympians Association in Asia-Oceania, similar to those formed in the African and Pan American regions. President Fosbury believes this would be beneficial in increasing communications within the region and building the Olympian database. A commission of delegates was formed to assess how to move forward with this regional association. The other highlight was presentations by the National Olympians Associations delegates on their activities for the past year. Also discussed were WOA Programs, Benefits to Olympians, and Marketing & Communication strategies.

WOA Executive Committee Member Samer Kamal (JOR), Chair of the WOA Business Affairs Commission, attended the Congress and stated, “Following the successful exchange of ideas and activities that took place at this Congress, the delegates feel well prepared for the upcoming WOA General Assembly.” The Assembly is scheduled to take place in the fall of 2011.

“I am pleased and proud to again hear of the participation by Asia Oceania Olympians in their communities, promoting the Olympic values of Fair Play, Sport for All, and Peace through Sport as ambassadors of goodwill.” Dick Fosbury, President WOA
