Collectible Olympic coin series ready for release

Gold and silver coins dedicated to the 2014 XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

December 6, 2010, Moscow: General Partner of the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Sberbank of Russia, and the Central Bank of the Russian Federation have signed an agreement to issue a special series of collectible gold and silver coins dedicated to the 2014 XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The signing of the agreement was witnessed by the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee President, Dmitry Chernyshenko and General Director of V/O Goznak, Arkady Trachuk.

The series will present a range of coins featuring: “Olympic Sports”, “Mass Sports”, “Olympic Venues”, “Cultural Heritage”, “The uniqueness of the Sochi Region” amongst others.. A total of 21 types of commemorative coins made of silver, 13 of gold and 3 of non-ferrous metal are planned to be issued for mass circulation. There will also be 1 issue of savings coins made of silver and 2 types of gold. The coins will be issued in the Russian Federation from 2011.

The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee President Dmitry Chernyshenko noted:

“The launch of the coin program always has special significance in the preparation for the Olympic Games. Coins depicting various winter sports and the Sochi Olympic venues will become collectors’ items for countless fans of the Olympic and Paralympic Movement. These coins are particularly special as their manufacture will use innovative technologies to create them, which once again underlines our commitment to creating the most innovative Games in history.”

The implementation of the coin program is one of the areas of long-term partnership with Sberbank of Russia and the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee. The partnership also provides Sberbank of Russia with a platform for them to implement of a number of development projects for the service banking infrastructure of the Krasnodar Region and Sochi as well as a number of special programs for bank clients, guests and participants of the Games in Sochi.

The names “Olimpiiskii” (Olympic), “Olimpiada” (Olympiad), “Sochi 2014”, “Olympic”, “Olympic Winter Games”, “Olympic Games”, “Sochi 2014” and words and phrases formed from their roots are protected Olympic symbols according to current legislation. Among other protected objects are Olympic symbols, fire, torch, flag, anthem, motto, as well as emblems, symbols, and similar designations of previous and future Olympic Games.

The right to use Olympic symbols in Russia belongs exclusively to the Worldwide Partners of the Olympic Movement, the National Partners of “Sochi 2014” at all levels, as well as companies that have entered into an appropriate licensing agreement with the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee.

To date, this includes the following companies: Aeroflot, MegaFon, Rostelecom, Rosneft, Sberbank of Russia, Volkswagen Group Rus, Russian Railways Company "RZD", BoscoSPORT and Ingosstrakh, as well as the Worldwide Partners of the Olympic movement who have signed a contract for the 2014 Games in Sochi, including the companies: Coca-Cola, Atos Origin, Dow Chemical, Omega, Panasonic, Procter & Gamble, Samsung and Visa.

Partners of the XXII Olympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi are chosen according to the results of a competitive contest in open categories, and the competition itself is conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee. It is possible to apply to participate in the Sochi 2014 sponsor contest at the site of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, www.sochi2014.com, section "Sponsorship". There it is also possible to apply to become a Sochi 2014 licensee in one of 13 different categories - from product packaging to cufflinks and jewelry. The regulations for choosing sponsor companies and licensees are posted on the official website of the Organizing Committee.
