David Beckham in awe of London 2012 Olympic Park
Beckham made first visit to the site since the bid was won in 2005.
The Olympic Park in east London today had a very special visitor in the shape of David Beckham, who made his first visit to the site since winning the bid in 2005. The LA Galaxy and England player was shown around the site by Sebastian Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).
Beckham played a high profile role in the successful bid to bring the Games to London as an ambassador, was part of the bidding delegation which travelled to Singapore and was also part of the London 2012 handover performance, which was part of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games closing ceremony.
David Beckham said of today’s visit: ‘I think the Olympic Park is incredible and I am delighted that I have been involved from the very beginning. The area I know so well is being transformed, the amazing dream is becoming a reality and I have seen first-hand how much hard work has gone into the project. This is great for the East End and for sport.’
LOCOG Chairman Sebastian Coe said, ‘David has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the London 2012 family, playing a key role in the bid and being part of our handover show in Beijing. I was delighted to be able to show him around the site, which of course is in a part of London he knows well. His belief and support is well known and he was thrilled to see the progress being made.’
