SportAccord releases Common Standards on Sports Integrity in Relation to Sports Betting

Few of the international sports federations have rules in place to manage the risks of corrupting sport through the use of irregular or illegal betting practices.

With the aim of supporting all international sports federations, both Olympic and non-Olympic, in tackling sports betting that is associated with attempts to fix matches and alter the results of sporting competitions, SportAccord has drafted a set of Common Standards. Included are Model Rules regarding the regulation of participants’ betting activities, regulations of competitions, and recommended disciplinary procedures and sanctions. Working in close collaboration with the IOC Ethics Commission, SportAccord’s recently launched Sports’ Integrity Unit will support its’ members in safeguarding sports integrity in relation to sports betting which has developed rapidly in recent years.

By ensuring effective rules are in place and are enforced SportAccord will assist sports federations manage the risks of corruption through sports betting. A generic, sports-wide Education, Communication and Prevention Programme on Sports Betting that can be adapted by each federation is currently being developed. SportAccord, in partnership with key actors, is also investigating the establishment of a Sports Betting Intelligence and Investigation System to ensure a coordinated and strategic approach to managing suspicious incidents.
