Wardian wins bronze, leads Team USA to team silver at World 100 km Championships

International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100km World Championships in Gibraltar.

INDIANAPOLIS - Michael Wardian (Arlington, Va.), took the individual bronze medal, leading the U.S. men's squad to a team silver medal Sunday at the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100km World Championships in Gibraltar.

Wardian finished in six hours, 49 minutes, 18 seconds to lead five U.S. men to top-25 finishes. Chikara Omine (San Francisco, Calif.) also scored a top-ten finish, taking ninth in 6:58:09, while Matt Woods (Falls Church, Va.) finished 12th in 6:58:36, Chad Ricklefs (Boulder, Colo.) finished 14th in 7:01:36 and Joseph Binder (Berkley, Calif.) finished 25th in 7:16:43.

Shinji Nakadai of Japan won the individual title in 6:43:44 to lead Japan to the team gold. Jonas Buud (SWE), last year's runner-up, took second in 6:47:40.

In the women's race, Meghan Arbogast (Corvallis, Ore.) finished fifth in 7:46:01 and Carolyn Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) finished ninth in 7:58:26. The women's overall title was won by Ellie Greenwood of Great Britain in 7:29:05, leading Great Britain to the women's team title. Italy took the team silver and Japan claimed the team bronze. Team USA failed to finish a scoring team.
