Annecy 2018 congratulates the French rowing team!

Annecy 2018 would like to congratulate the French rowing team, which won two world titles at the World Championships in New Zealand last night.

France became world champion in the men’s four with Jean-Baptiste Macquet, Germain Chardin, Julien Desprès and Dorian Mortelette, only an hour after Jean-Christophe Bette and Fabien Tilliet won gold in lightweight pairs.

Edgar Grospiron, Olympic Champion and CEO of the bid said: “This is great news, and we are thrilled. We would like to congratulate these champions, who have won two gold medals in two separate disciplines, less than an hour apart! This victory clearly shows that French oarsmen and women are carrying the banner high for French sport on the international stage. Their triumph demonstrates France’s capacity to produce champions who succeed at the very highest level in all sports, winter and summer alike.”

“This historic victory is a strong indication of France’s undeniable standing on the international sporting scene, reinforcing our reputation as a nation that is passionate about sport. The French Annecy 2018 bid is supported by a huge number of athletes, including those who compete in the Summer Games. Today it’s our turn to support and congratulate these exceptional athletes, and we are thrilled for the entire French rowing team,” added Florence Masnada, Olympic medallist and Annecy 2018’s ambassador to the sporting world.

Annecy is a candidate to host the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2018. The International Olympic Committee will announce its decision on 6 July 2011 during the 123rd Session of the IOC in Durban, South Africa.
