PyeongChang 2018 Technical Committee gears up for International Olympic Committee visit

The Technical Committee reviewed key components of PyeongChang 2018’s Games Plan.

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, 29 OCTOBER 2010: The Technical Committee for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid met today to review the progress of the Bid's technical Games Plan ahead of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Committee visit to PyeongChang in February 2011.

The Technical Committee reviewed key components of PyeongChang 2018's Games Plan including Competition Venues, Transport, Olympic Village, Media Village and the Environment by examining finalized floor plans, detailed technical drawings and the draft Bid Book. The Technical Committee's discussions and advice will be incorporated into the final draft of the Bid Book, which is due for IOC submission in January 2011.

The PyeongChang 2018 Technical Committee is a group of 26 experts recommended by Korea's seven winter sports federations, who provide technical expertise in the areas of sports competition, environment, engineering, and transport.

Following the Technical Committee's meeting today the group made a number of observations, including:

Ÿ  PyeongChang has now developed significant winter sports infrastructure, as highlighted by the completion of the biathlon, cross country and ski jumping venues which meet international competition standards

Ÿ  The design for the new ice rinks allows for a section of the spectator stand to be removed, providing greater flexibility for venue use after Olympic Winter events have been completed

Ÿ  The new high-speed railway between Seoul and Gangneung, guaranteed by the Korean government, will connect Seoul and PyeongChang in just 50 minutes

Yang ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee said: "The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid is grateful for the Technical Committee's expert advice and recommendations. We will listen carefully to their opinions and prepare thoroughly to showcase the best of PyeongChang to the IOC Evaluation Committee next February, including our excellent venues and the new railway."
