BID FOR 2022 WITHDRAWN
RUSSIA IS READY TO INSPIRE WITH 2018 FIFA WORLD CUP™
Moscow, 22 October 2010 - Russia is setting its sights exclusively on being awarded the right to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ and has formally withdrawn its bid for the 2022 edition of the world's biggest and most important single sports event.
With indications being made that the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ is destined to be hosted by a European country, the Russia Bid Committee has decided to focus completely on that tournament.
Ahead of next week's meeting of the FIFA Executive Committee in Zurich, bid chairman Vitaly Mutko informed FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and Secretary-General Jérôme Valcke today, stating: "We hereby have the pleasure to inform you that the Russian Bid Committee and the Russian Football Union as a FIFA member association have made a decision to no longer pursue our bid for the 2022 tournament and to concentrate our efforts on the 2018 FIFA World Cup™. We therefore formally withdraw our bid for the 2022 competition."
Minister Mutko added: "We hope to be entrusted with the hosting of FIFA's flagship event and are ready to inspire the global football family in 2018."
FIFA will designate the host nations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup tournaments at a special meeting of the Executive Committee on 1 and 2 December 2010.
