Key Sessions Include:
Financial Fair Play
- Chris Alexander, Finance Director, Chelsea FC
- Brian Kennelly, Blackstone Chambers
UEFA's financial fair play regulations are a pressing concern to football clubs in the UK and across Europe. With the transfer market showing no signs of slowing and an increasing investment in clubs by individual benefactors, some may find it difficult to comply with UEFA's financial provisions. This session will look at how these regulations will impact on the market for players including player salaries, transfer fees and other payments to players.
Integrity
- David Douglas, Chairman, WPBSA Disciplinary Committee, tbc
- Jim Sturman QC, 2 Bedford Row
Integrity is a major issue for sports governing bodies to address at present, as allegations of cheating and match-fixing continue to be levelled at sports stars. Jim Sturman will examine how governing bodies and clubs can manage the risk and consider the difficulties in prosecuting these sorts of offences.
Rick Parry once stated "The fundamental thing is that one allegation or one provable case can have a devastating impact on a sport." David Douglas, Chairman of the WPBSA Disciplinary Committee will provide delegates with an inside account of the John Higgins case, which some months ago threatened to destroy faith in the games's integrity. David will share his practical experience of this high-profile investigation and the establishment of snooker's brand new integrity unit.
Payments to Players Across Europe
- Aurélien Hammelle (represented Nike in PSG case)
- Luca Ferrari, President, Serie Bwin
- Juan de Dios Crespo Pérez, Director, Ruiz Huerta & Crespo
In recent years the HMRC and authorities in Europe become interested in how clubs make payments to players, whether through image rights structures or otherwise. We review the position in the UK and in other countries in Europe.
Injury on International Duty
- Philip Hall, Managing Director, HCC Specialty Underwriters - London Operations
- Peter Limbert, Lawyer, Hammonds LLP
Analysis of recent cases involving player injury whilst on club duty (such as Fenerbaçhe v Appiah) and international duty (Van Persie), the problem of claiming compensation and advice on how clubs can protect themselves through insurance and other measures.
Doping
-Mike Stow, Head of Science and Medicine, UK Anti-Doping
-Mike Morgan, Lawyer, Hammonds LLP
Blood profiling is the latest method used by sporting bodies to ascertain whether an athlete has been involved in illegal doping. We examine how this works and whether the athlete implicated can challenge a conviction based on changes in his blood profile. FIFA Regulations currently permit players to resume team training before the expiry of a sanction. We also examine whether this provision is WADA-Code compliant and whether it should be introduced in other sports.
Compensation in Disputes between Clubs and Players
- Stephen Sampson, Partner, Hammonds LLP
- Adam Lewis, QC, Blackstone Chambers
A review of Training Compensation in the light of the ECJ decision in Olivier Bernard and how compensation will be calculated under Article 17 of the FIFA Regulations following the CAS decisions in FC Sion and Appiah.
Media & Privacy
- Jacob Dean, Barrister, 5RB Media and Entertainment Law
A number of sporting stars have recently been implicated in 'scandals' reported by the media. We examine methods that can be used to prevent such articles being published and whether contracts can be terminated following the publication of such an article.
Regulation of Player Agents
- Paolo Lombardi, CEO, SportsTeam (ex-Head of Disciplinary & Governance at FIFA)
- Roberto Branco Martins, General Manager, European Association of Football Agents
Covering potential regulation at the European level and changes to the domestic regulations.
