The Polish team of Sylvia Czwojdzinska and Remigiusz Golis have become the first ever Modern Pentathlon Mixed Relay World Champions today at the Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre in Chengdu, China.
Poland out classed the Ukrainian team of Victoria Tereshuk and Pavlo Tymoshchenko who grabbed Silver and the pre event favourites Lithuania represented by the Silver and Bronze Medallists from the individual event Donata Rimsaite and Justinas Kinderis.
Poland’s day got off to a flying start coming 2nd in the fencing behind Latvia and a scorching time from swimming speedster Golis in the swimming got them 5th position. They managed to get around the tough riding course which knocked a lot of contenders out of the event like the winner of the fencing Latvia and Belarus by scoring 1100 points. This meant they has a slim lead heading into the Combined Event which they maintained the entire event to stroll over the finishing line for a historic victory.
Golis: "This competition is very special to me as it is a senior competition and I am still considered a junior for one more year. But I must say it wasn't Gold without the way Sylvia (Czwojdzinska) performed today."
Czwojdzinska: "I think we did a great job, we got second place in the fencing and Remigiusz had a great swim. We had good horses and everything just came together for us today. It's our first time competing in the Mixed Relay and I think it was fun and something different. I am the oldest in the team, Remigiusz is the youngest, we always get on well and make a good team!"
The Ukrainian team was thrilled with their Silver medal and could not compliment each other enough.
Tereshuk: "I feel happy that I competed in the first ever World Championships Mixed Relay. Pavlo had a really hard horse, but did really well. He was supporting me the whole day telling me 'I must win, you want to win'. It has been my first big competition since Beijing (Olympics 2008), so this is really a surprise. Now, I can't wait to get back home to celebrate my baby's first birthday later this month."
Tymoshchenko: "I felt nervous in the last shooting, I could feel the other guys shooting close by. But I'm satisfied and Victoria is totally unbelievable and we have a great feeling together. In this new competition we feel like we are the dream team."
The Lithuanian team was in reach of the Polish team heading into the last couple of shoots, however Kinderis could not reproduce his shooting from the individual event and they had to settle for 3rd.
Rimsaite: "He (Kinderis) just couldn't hit the last shot, he tried 5 or 6 times. Of course it's a little disappointing, but I always try to look on the positive side of things. We still came out with a medal and medals are always good, I like those things."
Kinderis: "I'm unhappy because we had the perfect chance to win, but I made some mistakes on the shooting. I saw Pavlo (Tymoshchenko (UKR)) shooting by the side of me and because I knew we had such a good chance at winning, I became tense during the last shoot. But third place is still good."
UIPM President Dr h.c. Klaus Schormann was very happy with this new World Championship format stating: The Mixed Relay has allowed countries like Cuba, Kazakhstan and Turkey to compete in more events on the world stage. This is fantastic for the development of the sport globally.
