Caze Again Modern Pentathlon World Champion
Amelie Caze (FRA) has made history by winning her 3rd World Championships title in a rain drenched final today at the Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre in Chengdu, China.
Amelie Caze (FRA) has made history by winning her 3rd World Championships title in a rain drenched final today at the Pierre de Coubertin Modern Pentathlon Centre in Chengdu, China.
She easily beat Donata Rimsaite (LTU) who won the Silver and Olympic Champion Lena Schoneborn (GER) who claimed Bronze.
Caze stated “Every time is different, and it’s really hard to win again and again. To win you really have to be best in all events, as athletes are constantly running and shooting faster.”
Caze was on the top of the leader’s board right at the beginning of the day. She came 2nd in the fencing, only one bout behind Aya Medany (EGY) and then had a solid swim finishing in 4th place behind her French team mate Elodie Clouvel.
This had her leading into the riding event which she scored an impressive 1148 points. This meant she had a commanding lead of 38 seconds going into the combined event which she never looked like losing, holding her nerve to easily take Gold at the 50th Modern Pentathlon World Championships.
Silver Medallist and World #1 Rimsaite “I was expecting to be in the top 10, but I would not have been satisfied with just that. I performed best in the combined event, but I had a terrible ride even though luckily that was not reflected in the points.”
Bronze Medallist Schoneborn “I never expected anything coming into this and I was happy to get through the semi-final. The fence was alright today, the swim was not as good as I wanted it to be. The ride was good, I had a really great horse. My hands are still shaking from that. My first shoot wasn’t good, but I just kept going.”
On the back of Caze’s record breaking gold medal the French team claimed Gold in the team’s event. The French coach Christian Roudaut stated “All coaches wish for this outcome, but it’s not easy. I am personally very, very pleased for Amelie as she has worked so hard and is, individually, an exceptional athlete. Of course it is great for the whole team, especially for the young girls who could stand on the podium together.”
Great Britain got 2 girls in the top 10 which was enough for them to win the Silver medal. Their coach Nemeth Istvan said “I very pleased with the Silver although I was expecting Gold. If we had shot normally we would have the Gold and be meeting with the Queen later this year.”
Schoneborn made it 2 bronze medals with Germany just getting enough points to edge out Hungary for the Bronze Teams Medal.
