Koscheck Should Keep His Eye on the Prize not His Image

The UFC confirmed this week that welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his title in his hometown of Montreal, Canada against Josh Koscheck, news that should leave Koscheck nervous considering the way he left things following his victory for the number-one contendership back there in May.
Thirty-two-year-old Josh Koscheck (15-4) still needs to learn right from wrong. So much so that it really is getting embarrassing at this point.
Of course, there’s the obvious need for him to stop punching people in the face, but I’ll let that one slide considering its his job and all. But, dating back to the UFC fighter’s May 8 victory over Paul Daley in Montreal, Canada for the welterweight-title number-one contendership, it has also become pretty evident that he needs to learn his manners. For example, as former-comic-turned-anti-plagiarism-activist Joe Rogan attempted to conduct a post-fight interview following the unanimous decision, Koscheck not only ignored the question but ripped the microphone from out of Rogan’s hands.
Additionally, the Pennsylvanian should acknowledge that it’s wrong to incite the crowd, just as he did with the mic firmly in his grasp, saying: “Hey, don’t worry. The Pittsburgh Penguins are gonna kick your ass next week, baby,” in reference to the NHL playoff series between the Pens and the Canadiens, that the Habs ultimately won. He even added an obnoxious “YEAHHHH!!!” for good measure, as if he needed to convince himself that the heavily favoured Penguins wouldn’t choke to the degree that they did. And, boy, did they ever, turning red instead of just black and white all over.
Now, normally, I wouldn’t really bring his inability to correctly predict the outcomes of sporting events into the equation, but it does lend itself to a certain relevancy in this specific instance, due to what he said next: “And then I’m going to beat [welterweight champion and French-Canadian Georges] St-Pierre [20-2], so you guys are going to lose twice. How about that? Yeah, that’s right Montreal.”
Considering how infamous Montrealers have become for taking hockey seriously, Koscheck’s inflammatory remarks have gone down in the history books as incredibly ballsy (and really offensive), but they could just have easily have made up the single-dumbest move of his career.
Habs fans have become equally notorious for their riots following every post-season victory, loss, and, hell, each time a shot is launched on goal, so Koscheck should consider himself lucky that he escaped Montreal alive to see another day, most specifically next December 11, when his title shot is set. Of course, the home crowd may just as easily have been biding its time, as UFC 124 will take place in Montreal, as confirmed this week.
Koscheck, who has also tweeted some trash talk in the lead-up to the announcement (tastelessly saying “We got a frenchy’s ass to kick”, among other comments), should most definitely focus his pissing-off-the-crowd efforts elsewhere, primarily due to how well St-Pierre matches up against him. St-Pierre actually beat Koscheck in April 2007 at UFC 74 in a unanimous decision, his first of seven-straight victories, a streak that could very well be extended next December.
St-Pierre, considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, is the favourite heading into the fight. By that token, Koscheck is entitled to try and get into his head and play some mind games, but at his own risk. St-Pierre has gone on record as saying that he knows not to be distracted by Koscheck’s arrogance, but that it will nonetheless give him an edge in the octagon when it comes time to face him. Not only that, but the crowd, which may not matter all that much to Koscheck and his dated bad-boy, devil-may-care attitude, should nonetheless give St-Pierre some added motivation to beat his opponent soundly this coming winter. You might even say embarrass him further. If it’s even possible.
