Colorful and spectacular Opening of the first SportAccord World Combat Games

Beijing, Aug 28: Since 8:45 pm, the inaugural SportAccord World Combat Games are proclaimed open. The Ceremony was held in the Beijing National Indoor Stadium. With 15.000 seats, the stadium was sold out.

The Opening Ceremony was through and through a spectacular affair, featuring fabulous artistic performances. The audience was amazed by the beautifully and carefully designed choreographies full of symbolism and the colorful costumes of the artists. The story of martial arts was told in six different chapters.

The night began with the impressive parade of the athletes, sorted not by nations as usual but by Federations. Several speakers followed, among them Hein Verbruggen, President of SportAccord. Mr. Verbruggen thanked the City of Beijing and Local Organising Committee for the great dedication and professionalism with which the challenge of setting up these first SportAccord World Combat Games was managed: “Chinese hospitality is legendary. We will experience many memorable occasions during these eight days.”

The second historic moment this evening was golden: Macau's Wushu fighter Jia Rui is the first athlete ever to win a gold medal in the SportAccord World Combat Games. With amazingly liquid motions he scores 9.80 in Men’s Changquan and ranks first.
