Anastasiya Spas (UKR) and Ilya Shugarov (RUS) have created history by taking Gold in the first ever Modern Pentathlon Mixed Relay Event at the First ever Youth Olympic Games with a combined total of 4638 points. Spas & Shugarov outlasted Kim Dae Beom (KOR) and his partner Zhu Wenjing (CHN) who grabbed Silver and Gulnaz Gubaydullina (RUS) and Lukas Kontrimavicius (LTU) who claimed a well deserved Bronze.

Spa’s said of her win: “I was lucky to get Ilya Shugarov at draw. We know each very well, I would say we are friends. There was a good communication between us as we could speak Russian and make tips to each other the whole way round. My coach said that I would have the whole month free of competitions, so I had no choice but to make put in 100%."

Shugarov stated “I am so happy, to get 2 medals is a dream, this format is great and Anastasiya was amazing”

Spas & Shugarov who also claimed Bronze and Silver respectively in individual event looked like winners from the beginning of the day. They led the entire fencing event and ended up winning comfortably by 7 victories over pairs Dilyara Ilyassova (KAZ) and Aleix Heredia (ESP) and Ela Sehave (KAZ) and Valentin Prades (FRA).

Swimming speedsters Zsofia Foldhazi (HUN) and Aliaksandr Biruk (BLR) won the swimming event. They just touched out the pair of Gulnaz Bugaydullina (RUS) and Lukas Kontrimavicius (LTU) in an impressive time of 1:58.39. Spas & Shugarov finished in 4th position which allowed them to maintain their lead from the fencing.

More of the same impressive performance came from Spas & Shugarov in the Combined Event as they maintained their 33 second lead that they had going into the Combined Event to clinch the title. The Bronze medal pair of Gubaydullina and Kontrimavicius had a scorching Combined Event to shoot them from 14th position to grab that special Bronze Medal.

Kontrimavicius said "I am so satisfied to jump to the podium after the 14th place we had after the swimming session. I think it was much due to the accurate shooting or myself and Gulnaz."

The medals presenter of this Mixed Relay where the athletes were put together by a complete random draw where we had a Cuban with an American, Australian with a Polish, and a Mexican with an Irish was IOC Executive Board Member Mr Sam Ramsamy and the Mascots were given by UIPM President Dr h.c.
