Mass participation sporting events held to show support for PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Bid

Race was organized by the PyeongChang Athletics Federation.

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, 23 August 2010: 300 participants took part in a 10 kilometre run yesterday (22 August 2010) around the Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang to show their support of the city's bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The race, consisting of 43 teams, was organised by the PyeongChang Athletics Federation and highlights the appeal of the Alpensia Resort as a year-round sporting destination.

Bum-yeon Lee, President of the PyeongChang Athletics Federation, said: "We are delighted to host this race in the beautiful surroundings of the Alpensia Resort. This event was planned to celebrate PyeongChang's selection as a Candidate City and we expect that events such as these will continue to build enthusiasm for the bid in the region and across the country."

PyeongChang's Alpensia Resort is one of the principal Olympic clusters in the bid's Games Plan and would be the location of the main Olympic Village, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and several competition venues such as Cross Country and Biathlon.

PyeongChang also hosted a Cross Country Challenger MTB (mountain bike) race with more than 1,200 participants and spectators attending the event in Jungbong. The race spanned across a 36.8 kilometre course in Jungbong, the proposed venue for Alpine Skiing in PyeongChang's bid to host the 2018 Winter Games.

Yang Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of PyeongChang 2018, said: "The sporting events held across PyeongChang this weekend highlights our passion for sport, no matter what season it is. As part of our bid for the 2018 Winter Games, we aim to show that our venues and facilities are multi-purpose and can be enjoyed by people all year round."
