Religions unite in support of PyeongChang 2018

Religion Peace Council was formed recently

PYEONGCHANG, SOUTH KOREA, 19 AUGUST 2010: Religious leaders gathered in Gangwon, South Korea to express support for PyeongChang’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Buddhist, Christian and Catholic leaders in Gangwon met recently to form the Religion Peace Council and today announced a Declaration of Support for PyeongChang’s bid.

Reverend Chul Lee, Co-representative of the Religion Peace Council and Chairman of the Gangwon Christian Society, said: “Sport is a great way to achieve peace and harmony, and it is has the amazing potential to bring people from different backgrounds together. The members of the Council are united in support of this bid, and we hope that PyeongChang will realize its ambitions to host Winter Games in 2018.”

Yang Ho Cho, Chairman and CEO of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee, said: “We thank the Religion Peace Council for their valued support. A Winter Games in PyeongChang will be for everyone and it would be an honour for us to welcome the world to South Korea in 2018.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The city of PyeongChang in Gangwon Province, South Korea is bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2018. The city’s bid is managed by the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Bid Committee, a non-profit organisation that was established on 14 September 2009. The Chairman and CEO of the Bid Committee is Yang Ho Cho, who is also Chairman of Korean Air. Additional members of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee include representatives from all levels of national and local government, the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC), the Korean Paralympic Committee (KPC), winter sports athletes and para-athletes, and private businesses. The election of the Host City of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games will take place during the 123rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Durban, South Africa on 6 July 2011.
