Brett "Flip Flop" Favre is Coming Back... or Is He?

Will we ever know if there was any truth behind reports that Brett Favre texted his Minnesota Vikings team mates in early August to tell them that he was calling it a career?

Probably not. But I wouldn’t put it past him, now that he has seemingly come back for another season two weeks later. Put simply, it’s vintage Favre, or, more accurately, vintage post-first-retirement-announcement Favre.

It’s all unofficial at this point, so don’t be surprised if he changes his mind, but… ahh, who am I kidding? Does anything really surprise us when it comes to Brett Favre nowadays? Whether it’s his whole annual flip-flop routine, his still being able to throw a pigskin at 40 years of age, or the fact that he decided last year to play for the Green Bay Packers’ arch-nemeses, Favre’s unpredictable antics have become as commonplace as the sun coming up each morning. Be honest now: would it really shock anyone to see him put on a pair of parachute pants and sing an homage to MC Hammer? No one thought he would ever wear the (arguably less fashionable) purple and gold and, yet, here we are.
While it is enviable that he has decided to resurrect his 19-year football career again despite a nagging ankle injury, one more question needs to be asked: just what is he thinking? He’s already done it all from winning a Super Bowl to appearing in 1998’s There’s Something About Mary. In case you hadn’t realized, Mr. Favre, movie cameos are available to retired sports greats as well.

Now Favre may say that he’s doing it for the love of the game, and after throwing 33 touchdowns last year he clearly still has at least some ability, but, make no mistake, Favre will not win another championship. Not with Peyton Manning (just) 34 years old. Not with Tom Brady 33. Not with Drew Brees a practically pre-pubescent 31 and his New Orleans Saints well-poised to repeat this year.

Yes, Favre may love the game as much as his own children, but maybe he should revisit his priorities, especially considering the incredibly violent nature of the sport. On any given play, he stands so much more risk of suffering a concussion or any other type of debilitating injury than if he were playing basketball (where players seem to catfight if ever caught in a scuffle) or baseball (where the most action a position players sees in this, the year of the pitcher, is the pizza-delivery guy coming their way onto the field).

It’s safe to say that Favre has secured his position as one of the all-time greats of the sport and made enough money to last the rest of his and his family’s lifetimes. He should also realize that how even at 40 he has so much life left to live that shouldn’t be wasted hiking a football and trying to avoid 300-pound behemoths trying to sandwich him in the pocket. I mean, the dude is a grandfather (not just figuratively either… the dude is actually a grandfather).

As much as the game may give you, Mr. Favre, you have given your fair share back. And just as much as you have given, the game has clearly taken from you. Maybe it’s time to give more time to your family before there’s even less of you left.
