ANNECY 2018 UPDATE: A passion for sport and the mountains

The Annecy 2018 bid has its roots in a land of champions, mountains and outdoor sports lovers.

Last weekend two special events were held in the region, both of which demonstrate the area's commitment to the promotion of sporting activities.

The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix (Chamonix Mountain Guide Society) was founded in 1821, and today unites around 200 mountain guiding professionals. Each year, hundreds of people come together for the traditional Guide's festival in order to welcome the new members of the Compagnie. The 86th edition of the festival, took place on Sunday 15th August in Chamonix and was attended by Bernard ACCOYER, President of the French National Assembly, and by Eric FOURNIER, Mayor of Chamonix.

As nowadays, the mountain guiding profession encompasses a multitude of sporting activities, the creation of a "Mont-Blanc ski et guides compagnie" (Mont Blanc Skiing and Guiding Society) was announced. This new organization which gathers Chamonix ski schools and the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix aims at making a comprehensive range of mountain activities available to the general public.

The internationally-reknowned Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix will therefore be able to lean on 740 professionals, all sharing the same passion for outdoor sports. The Annecy 2018 bid, which defends the sporting, economic and environmental values of the local area, is thus endorsed by a network of mountain professionals based around Mont Blanc, symbol of the bid. 


An area devoted to sports and home to legions of outdoor sport lovers, Annecy celebrated its traditional lake crossing on Sunday 15th August. During the 79th edition of the crossing, around a thousand swimmers dived into the water to swim across Europe's purest lake. Every year this summertime tradition attracts avid swimmers from England, Germany, Italy and even Holland, who enjoy the convivial atmosphere with sport and nature lovers.

Achievements:
Several guides from the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix have made the headlines in 2010 for their mountaineering achievements, such as conquering the world's steepest climbing route, the "Ramirole" (Verdon Gorge ) and the "Digital Crack 8A +" (Mont Blanc massif).

Annecy 2018 is bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games with Munich (Germany) and PyeongChang (South Korea).
