Having young people at the heart of the world's biggest winter sports event is one of the priorities of the Annecy 2018 bid.  With the support of the Rhône-Alpes Region and its advisory body, the Regional Economic and Social Committee (CESR) representative of the civil society of the territory, Annecy 2018 is launching a programme to involve and mobilize a million youngsters from the surrounding area as part of its bid.

"Having the opportunity to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games would give us the chance to launch a real social and educational project based on genuine values - hosting Games that are local, in the heart of the mountains, where everyone is close by, sharing in the experience and of course with a focus on sustainable development and a different way of preserving the mountains," said Edgar Grospiron, Olympic moguls champion (1992) and CEO of the bid, after arriving in Singapore for the first Youth Olympic Games.

"The YOG are the confirmation, all around us here, that we are heading in the right direction with our bid. Young people need to be at the heart of our project - they are our greatest asset, here in Singapore, in Annecy, in France and throughout the world," added Antoine Deneriaz, Olympic downhill champion (2006) and Annecy 2018 ambassador. "We need to give them the opportunity to show how creative, energetic and dynamic they are. The first ever Youth Olympics have been a great success for the Olympic movement and for sport in general, and they are an incredible opportunity for young people to gain a unique experience in terms of excellence, friendship and respect - exactly the values that need to be developed, marketed and passed on by our local youngsters."

"For young people in our area, the Annecy 2018 bid represents dreams, hopes, an open attitude to other people and to the rest of the world in general, and also access to sport, training and even jobs. Thanks to the CESR research, we have decided to work together to directly involve a million youngsters from the surrounding area in building up our project. It will enable us to create a long-term dynamic involving partnerships and coordinated efforts from everyone involved - institutions, political bodies and associations as well as figures from the economic and social sphere - and launch a five-point education plan around Olympic values:  openness to culture and worldwide exchanges, awareness of sustainable development, practicing sport and mountains accessibility, awareness of handicaps, and co-creation network with young people," Grospiron said.

Annecy is a candidate to host the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2018. The International Olympic Committee will announce its decision on 6 July 2011 during the 123rd Session of the IOC in Durban, South Africa.
