Peace and Sport and Christian Karembeu visit Haiti to put sport at the service of reconstruction

Peace and Sport is working with the Haitian Olympic Committee to provide sports relief for the youth.

On 10-13 August, Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of "Peace and Sport, l'Organisation pour la Paix par le Sport" and Christian Karembeu, French football player in the World Cup winning team in 1998, will visit Haiti to underpin the role that sport can play in efforts to rebuild the country.

Peace and Sport, an international organization based in Monaco under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, works to bring divided communities together and promote social stability through sport. 4 months ago, at the request of the Haitian Olympic Committee (HOC), Peace and Sport launched a wide-scale mobilization operation, dubbed "Sport Solidarity for Haiti," to collect sports equipment and financial donations from the international sports community.

The HOC, in partnership with Peace and Sport and with the backing of UNICEF, is using the donated equipment in an emergency program that provides sports activities for children and adolescents from 8-20 years old living in 56 survivor camps in Port-au-Prince and Leogane. This physical exercise program helps young people to find familiar landmarks of their former lives and evacuate the trauma of the earthquake, thus contributing to a structured environment.

Already, 5 tons of sports equipment have been collected by Peace and Sport and sent to Haiti. Consequently, 35,000 young people now benefit from the program and have access to a variety of sports activities each week (football, volleyball, basketball, judo, chess etc.). 196 sports trainers have been recruited under this initiative.

This visit by Joel Bouzou and Christian Karembeu, who is a Peace and Sport "Champion for Peace", aims to take stock of the situation with the President of the HOC, Jean Edouard Baker. Together, they will evaluate the priorities needed for sport and meet the young beneficiaries of emergency program as well as sports trainers in the camps.

Joel Bouzou and Christian Karembeu will notably visit the Delmas 32 Camp on Wednesday 11 August.

They will also present a VIP Book to Mr. Evans Lescouflair, Minister of Youth, Sport and Civic Action, signed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and more than 140 major international athletes showing their solidarity and sending messages of hope and encouragement to Haiti's children. Signatories include Olympic champions Veronica Campbell Brown (200m), Felix Sanchez (400m), Steven Hooker (pole vault), Dwight Phillips (long jump), Andrei Silnov (high jump), triple World Champion of the 100 and 200m Tyson Gay, double middle-distance World Champion Bernard Lagat, and rising star of the 110m hurdles David Oliver.

Working meetings are also planned with local representatives from UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) as well as potential donors, intended to motivate and coordinate local and international stakeholders.
