Russian women's football champions, Zvezda-2005, manager Shek Borkowski believes that Russian Football Union has made the right decision to hire Vera Pauw as technical director of the Russian national team.
Pauw, 47, led the Netherlands to the UEFA Women's Euro 2009 semi-finals and is expected to transform women's football in Russia.
"I think Russia have brought in the right person," said Borkowski in an interview. "She has done very well in the Netherlands not only with national team but was also instrumental in the grass-root growth of
the women's game in the Netherlands."
According to Borkowski, who won two league and two cup titles in USA before moving to Russia in 2009, the next 2-5 years will be critical to the development of women's football in Russia, "Russia have some
good young players and are in a position to make vast improvements in the next 3 years. The resources are here and the Russian FA is investing in womens' football."
While some question the wisdom of hiring a foreigner to lead, Borkowski does not see it as a problem, "You will always have some negative voices. For Vera it will be important how she communicates with the media."
"Fans of women's football in Russia ask why Russian national team players do not perform like they do for their clubs recently, where both Rossiyanka and Zvezda had good success in the UEFA competitions.
Maybe it is about their motivation. They play with different players at international level; maybe it is about compatibility. But this is not just a Russian problem.
Borkowski believes that a foreigner must have a resonance with the country she's in. "You can't make the Russians play like Brazil or USA, you have to share the experience you have as a foreigner but its
important to have a balance."
"Every country has its own characteristics and styles. Russians have a good spirit but that is not enough today. Most European teams have
good psychology. Now you also need a tactical, strategic approach."
