Marosi Win's UIPM World Cup Final

Adam Marosi has successfully defended his World Cup Final crown by producing an incredible combined event in Moscow, Russia.

Adam Marosi has successfully defended his World Cup Final crown by producing an incredible combined event in Moscow, Russia. Marosi held off strong challengers from the home superstar Ilia FroLov and the always consistent David Svoboda (CZE) who won the Silver and Bronze Medals respectively. This was a welcome return to form for the World #1 who has struggled over the past few months to emulate his 2009 results. ‘I am so happy with this result. It is the best feeling knowing you were the best athlete, it is great to be the best again!’

The day started in perfect Russian Summer conditions in the Fencing hall. The vocal Russian crowd saw Nicola Benedetti (ITA) having his best ever fencing result finishing equal first with Frolov, much to the crowds delight and Stanislau Zhurauliou (BLR) who all had 24 victories and 11 defeats. This was one ahead of Dmytro Kirpulyanskyy (UKR) and 3 ahead of Double Olympic Champion Andrei Moiseev (RUS). Marosi had a disappointing fence to be a further 2 victories off the pace. The most consistent athlete of the year Andrejus Zadneprovskis (LTU) who usually is at the top of the fencing leaders board finished in 28th position which ruins his chances of a dream gold.

Remigiusz Golis (POL) has made up for his poor fencing by easily winning the swimming event by over 4 seconds in an impressive time of 1.54.5. Egyptian Amro El Geziry again showed his speed in the pool by finishing 2nd ahead of Nick Woodbridge (GBR) and Marosi who gained valuable points after his fencing performance to jump up to 5th position. Frolov’s 10th position in the swim was enough to keep him at the top of the leaders board with Aleksander Lesun (RUS) and Moiseev rounding out an all Russian top 3.

Under the hot sun 7 athletes managed a perfect score of 1200 in the riding event, including the top 4 athletes to start in the Combined Event. Frolov will start 1st, 9 seconds ahead of young team mate Lesun and 21 seconds ahead of World #1 Marosi. Moiseev had a disappointing ride to drop down to 5th, 25 seconds behind Frolov. The ever dangerous Svoboda and Combined Event specialist Benedetti being a further 10 seconds behind.

The Combined Event started with a massive roar from the parochial Russian crowd with Frolov extending his lead from the 1st shoot.  Next to leave was his team mate Lesun, Marosi and Kirpulyanskyy. Moiseev ruled himself out of a medal after a terrible shoot. Frolov led them into the 2nd shoot after a strong run with fencing champion Benedetti moving from 8th spot straight into 4th. Frolov failed to match his 1st fantastic first shoot and dropped back into 6th position. Marosi showed all his experience to leave 1st ahead of Lesun and Kirpulyanskyy. Frolov wasn’t going to let his poor shooting get him down, running himself back into 2nd position for the 3rd shoot behind Marosi.  Marosi again shot well to give himself an unbeatable lead on the final run, Frolov was next to leave ahead of Svoboda who came from 7th position to leave 3rd. Lesun cracked under the pressure to drop from 3rd to 6th in the final shoot. Marosi held on for a famous victory, ahead of Frolov and Svoboda.
