Women's Football: Borkowski hits out at Ukraine FA
Zvezda 2005 manager Shek Borkowski is concerned over “extensive” playing time of his players against Bosnia Herzegovina.
Ukraine’s Group 4 Women’s World Cup qualifying match 5:0 thrashing of Bosnia Herzegovina was welcomed news for Ukraine manager Anatoliy Kutsev.
Two goals by each Darina Apanaschenko and Olga Botchenko, and one by Vera Djatel moved Ukraine into a third place behind Poland and Hungary.
Russian champions manager Shek Borkowski was not as pleased. Both Apanaschenko and Djatel, who play for Borkowski’s club Zvezda 2005 in Russia, played nearly 90 minutes each.
Borkowski, whose side face league leaders Rossiyanka in Moscow in one week, was scathing about the Ukraine FA’s use of his players. “I think it’s irresponsible for both to play nearly 90 minutes in a match effectively decided by halftime,” he said.
The Pole said: "I want the players to do well for their national team, but both left for Ukraine carrying small injuries and for both to play against Bosnia Herzegovina when the outcome was effectively decided after the first 45 minutes is questionable.
While the club vs. country debate has been debated in men’s football for years, in women’s football it is a relatively new concern.
“It is becoming a bigger issue as top women’s footballers play more and more matches. Between qualification matches for the World Cup, European Championships, the Olympics, the UEFA Women’s Champions League, domestic league and cup, our top players end up playing as many as 50 matches in one year, and most of it is concentrated in April through October.
“Zvezda pays Apanaschenko and Djatel’s wages, we look after them all year so its important for national mangers to consider the club and players needs.
