Lena Schoneborn (GER) has capped off a remarkable World Cup Series by claiming Gold at the World Cup Final in Moscow, Russia to add to her other 3 Gold’s in 2010. Schoneborn comfortably beat Donata Rimsaite (LTU) and Elena Rublevska (LAT) who won Silver and Bronze respectively. Lena said ‘I am ecstatic about my form, I can’t seem to do anything wrong. I hope I can keep this form going into the World Championships’.
The day started in perfect conditions at the city of the 1980 Olympic Games. Rublevska showed a master class of fencing from start to finish have an amazing 28 victories and 5 defeats, easily beating current Olympic Champion Schoneborn and World Champion Qian Chen (CHN) who was a further victory behind. World #1 Rimsaite and Egyptian superstar Aya Medany (EGY) finished in 4th position to keep themselves in contention for the Gold Medal.
In the pool Leila Gyenesei (HUN) smashed her personal best time by nearly 2 seconds to beat the rest of the field by 4 seconds in an impressive time of 2:05.79. Next best, was local favourite Polina Struchtkova (RUS) and Samantha Murray (GBR) who emerged from the pool with a ripped swimsuit. Rublevska’s 26th position was enough to keep her at the top of the leaders board with Schoneborn breathing down her neck being only 4 points behind. Gyenesei’s blistering swim has rocketed her up to 3rd position.
Schoneborn showed her riding experience by producing a 1160 ride to jump over Rublevska to have a 4 second lead in the Combined Event. The big mover was Double World Cup Final Champion Rimsaite who scored a near perfect 1180 to start in 5th only 25 seconds behind Schoneborn. Medany had a terrible ride, only managing 996 points to plummet down to 14th position ruining her chances for gold.
The combined event took place in front of a solid Russian crowd who saw Schoneborn have a quick first shoot to increase her 4 second lead. Rublevska left 15 seconds later just ahead of Gyenesei and Rimsaite. Schoneborn continued her strong running form from World Cup #5 to maintain her lead, with Rimsaite sneaking into 2nd position. Schoneborn had a terrible 2nd shoot, however her big lead meant she still left 1st, just ahead of Gyenesei who had a near perfect shoot and Rimsaite. Schoneborn displayed her superior fitness to create a formidable lead going into the final shoot where she again shot poor. However it didn’t matter as she strolled to victory in the final run. Rimsaite and Rublevska shot well enough to leave the shoot 2nd and 3rd respectively and that is how they finished.
