MUNICH 2018 ENERGISED BY VANCOUVER DEBRIEF

Bid Committee takes best practice lessons from IOC debrief in Sochi

Munich, 10 June 2010: The Munich 2018 Bid Committee left the IOC Vancouver debrief in Sochi today armed with invaluable lessons that will strengthen their bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

The Munich 2018 Bid Committee, including CEO Willy Bogner and Managing Director Bernhard Schwank, has spent the last week learning best practice from the Organising Committees of Vancouver 2010, London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 on the successful execution of Olympic Bids and the Games themselves. Willy Bogner said the experience had been “extremely constructive” for him and the team:

‘The debrief has really helped to clarify where we are on the right track and where we can develop. I think there are three key lessons we need to take away with us. Firstly, VANOC’s Own The Podium programme has proved that putting athletes’ needs at the top of our agenda is of paramount importance to ensure high-performance and a legacy of sporting excellence. Secondly, we have seen how crucial it is to have a close-knit, united team with clear leadership and a clear vision. And finally, the constant in all these successful bids, Vancouver, London, Sochi and Rio, has been the will and passion to be awarded and then to deliver the Games.

‘Of course, these are all aspects of our bid we have been taking very seriously throughout the process, but this week has given us a fresh perspective on how to maximise our unique assets.’

Bogner went on to stress his support for Sochi 2014 and his conviction that 2014 Winter Games will leave a positive legacy for the region and for Russia as a whole.

He said, ‘We have enormous admiration for the way in which the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee is starting to execute its ambitious plans, and there are certainly a number of key lessons we can learn from them. Not least of these is their strong commitment to leaving a positive environmental and social legacy, which is something we feel extremely strongly about.

‘We will learn all the best practice we can from our time here in Sochi, so that we can ensure an Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Munich in 2018 would augment our own natural environmental treasures and leave a positive legacy for Munich, Bavaria and Germany.’

Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games reflects the region’s enduring affinity with winter sports. The supporting theme of the bid is its meticulous attention to detail on environmental prosperity.

The short distances between the sports venues and the environmentally friendly Olympic Villages in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, have aided a Games concept based on sustainability. Ice sports will be staged in Munich while Alpine events will be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The artificial ice track at Königssee will also be used to host some of the ice sports.

The Munich 2018 Bid Committee has developed a comprehensive environmental concept which is designed to set new standards in the Olympic Movement.
