Iilia Frolov (RUS) has re discovered the form that won him the 2008 World Championships by claiming Gold at World Cup #5 in Berlin Germany. Frolov won the sprint to the finish ahead of Justinas Kinderis (LTU) and Riccardo De Luca (ITA) who claimed Silver and Bronze respectively. Frolov said ‘It feels fantastic to get back on the podium after a disappointing season so far’.

The day started in hot steamy conditions in the fencing hall where Sandris Sika, (LAT) competing in his first World Cup of the year showed devastating fencing skill. Sika led for the entire event until the final round where young gun and former athlete Aleksander Lesun (RUS) overtook him to claim the fencing honours with 26 victories and 9 defeats leaving Sika one victory behind. Frolov and De Luca were 4 victories back in 4th position.

The swimming event took place in perfect Berlin Summer conditions. Ki-hyun Kim (KOR) produced a personal best time to easily win the event in a time 2:01.82. This was over 1.5 seconds faster than Andrejus Zadneprovskis (LTU) and Bruno Merle (FRA) who finished in second and third respectively. Lesun’s 11th position meant he retained his position at the top of the leaders board ahead of Zadneprovskis who finished 3rd and 2nd in the Fencing and Swimming.

There were major shocks in the riding event where pre event favourite and current event leader Lesun had a nightmare ride, only scoring 772 out of a possible 1200 which dropped him down to 25th position. 2nd placed Zadneprovskis also had a terrible ride which dropped him down to 8th. Frolov, Dong-hong Nam (KOR), Kinderis all had solid rides, but it was De Luca who scored a perfect 1200 and who mastered the tricky course, rocketing him up the table.

Due to their fantastic ride, Frolov and Nam started equal 1st in the Combined Event. However there was only 13 seconds separating the top 11 athletes. This proved to be nothing as veteran Edvinas Kruncolcas who started in 11th position left first, closely followed by Nam and Yunqi Xu (CHN).  In the 1st run De Luca showed his supreme pace by chasing down the leaders to arrive at the 2nd shoot in first position, closely followed by Nam and Kinderis.  Kinderis had the best 2nd shoot to leave the range in 1st position with a commanding 5 second lead over De Luca and Kruncolcas, who managed to work his way back to the leaders after a perfect shoot. Kinderis managed to hold onto his lead going into the final shoot where he kept his nerve and left 1st for the final run, just ahead of Frolov who had a phenomenal final shoot to gain 13 seconds over his rivals. Frolov’s superior running speed ensured his victory ahead of a fading Kinderis and De Luca who claimed his first ever World Cup Medal.
