Michael Garnes to speak at PGA TOUR Diversity Internship Program

By recruiting candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds, the PGA TOUR provides the golf and sports industry with access to highly talented and qualified candidates.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.—June 3, 2009—Michael Garnes, president of Next Level Executive Search, will be speaking to the 2010 PGA TOUR Diversity Internship Class, Friday at the TPC Sawgrass Media Center. Mike Cooney, Director of Human Resources for the PGA TOUR, invited Garnes as a guest speaker to kick off Friday's orientation events.

The PGA TOUR Diversity Internship Program is the first step to a challenging and rewarding experience to help interns transition into full time employment within the golf and sports industry.

Garnes, who was selected for his industry expertise, will be speaking to the PGA TOUR interns about the current sports industry employment landscape, job hunting in the sports industry during hard times, internship options and careers in sports, and how they can enhance their employment opportunities.

Next Level Executive Search, the company Garnes founded, specializes in placing mid- to senior-level sales and marketing leaders for sports leagues, teams and merchandisers.

"The PGA TOUR Diversity Internship Program is one of the best sports internship programs in the country," Garnes explained. 

"Mike Cooney (Director of Human Resources) and the PGA TOUR are very passionate about continuing the program's excellence. I am honored to have the opportunity to speak and engage with 32 of the best and brightest interns from such a wide variety of backgrounds."

Garnes began his sports-related executive search business, Next Level Executive Search, as part of a long career involved in both sports and business. In addition to corporate experience he has also been an NCAA Enforcement Representative and an NBA and WNBA certified athlete-agent. Garnes is currently the Vice-Chair of the National Association of Executive Recruiters (NAER) board, and has held positions on numerous non-profit boards and sports advisory committees.  As a Major in the U.S. Air Force and an Air Force Reserve Intelligence Officer, Mr. Garnes was recognized for excellence in recruiting.

He has been tapped for his sports industry knowledge by government entities and the media, and is a frequent guest speaker on sports industry issues. Garnes is also an advisor and mentor to young athletes in the community, and he is passionate about and committed to promoting higher education, with a special emphasis on at-risk and minority groups.
