2010 UIPM World Cup #4 Hungary Women's Final

Lena Schoneborn (GER) showed her class by easily claiming gold at World Cup #4 in Budapest, Hungary.

Budapest, Hungary: 8 May 2010 - Lena Schoneborn (GER) showed her class by easily claiming gold at World Cup #4 in Budapest, Hungary. Schoneborn led from the start of the day to the finish, beating Amelie Caze (FRA) who won silver and the local favourite Leila Gyenesei (HUN) taking a satisfying bronze medal. Schoneborn said “this was a fantastic day for me and I am really proud to have beaten such a strong field, everything just clicked”.

The day started with controversy in the fencing hall with Chinese athlete Wenjing Zhu (CHN) deliberately losing to her teammate and was eliminated from the discipline. This didn’t effect Olympic Champion Schoneborn’s concentration who won her first 8 bouts in a dominant display of fencing. After this unbeaten run, she was never caught, eventually winning the fencing by a massive 5 victories over Claudia Cesarini (ITA) and 6 more than Double World Champion Caze who fought back after a slow start to keep herself in contention. World #1 Donata Rimsaite (LTU) finished a disappointing 17th position for her standards 12 victories less than Schoneborn and Local Hero and World #6 Leila Gyenesei looks to have her dream for a gold medal on home soil dashed after finishing a disappointing 21st.

Elodie Clouvel (FRA) dominated the swimming event to win in a time of 2:09,90 beating a host of swimming speedsters including Gyenesei and Samantha Murray (GBR) and Caze by over a second. That swim moved Clouvel her up to 3rd position, with the winner from the fencing Schoneborn still held the lead after finishing 20th in the swim and Caze after her 3rd position in the fence and 4th position in the swim moved up to 2nd position ahead of the ride.

Only Schoneborn and Lucie Grolichova (CZE) managed a perfect ride on a tricky course here in overcast conditions here in Budapest. The course dismantled many contenders chance for gold including Egyptian superstar Aya Medany (627 points) and Double World Cup Final Winner Donata Rimsaite (1028 points). Schoneborn’s perfect ride meant that she had a commanding 18 second lead over Caze who also had a strong ride with Britain’s Louise Helyer being a further 31 seconds back going into the combined event.

A big vocal crowd was present to see Schoneborn’s 18 second lead in the combined event disappear in the first shoot with Caze beginning the first run equal with her. They entered the second shoot also together with Schoneborn finding her accuracy and only missing one shot as Caze struggled and opened up a commanding lead. Britain’s Samantha Murray showed her pace and accurate shooting to leave the second shoot in 3rd position after starting 10th. Schoneborn came into the 3rd shoot all alone, and this is how she left it, easing to victory in the final run to take her 2nd gold of the World Cup Series. Caze had to settle for silver and it was a battle in the final run for bronze between 4 athletes. It seemed like Elena Rublevska (LAT) had the medal won, however she got given a 10 second penalty for not putting her pistol down correctly. So it was Leila Gyenesei who had the stronger final shoot and run sending her local crowd into hysterics to snatch 3rd ahead of Murray and Paulina Boenisz (POL).

Schoneborn’s win means she jumps into 2nd in the New Balance World Ranking list from 4th, just a single point behind Rimsaite!
