2010 UIPM World Cup #4 Hungary Men's Final

Budapest, Hungary: 9 May 2010 – Rookie Aleksander Lesun has stunned the Pentathlon world by winning his first World Cup Gold Medal at only his 2nd World Cup.

Budapest, Hungary: 9 May 2010 - Rookie Aleksander Lesun has stunned the Pentathlon world by winning his first World Cup Gold Medal at only his 2nd World Cup. Lesun easily beat Andrejus Zadneprovskis (LTU) who is 15 years his elder and World #3 David Svoboda (CZE) who won Silver and Bronze respectively. Lesun said "This is the most unbelievable feeling and I can't believe it!"

The day started with disappointment, with World #5 Ondrej Polivka (CZE) and Gold Medal hopeful having to pull out with sickness after only 8 rounds into the fencing. By this time China's Lin Li Was undefeated and looked like he was going to run away with the event. However the 2 Russian's, Lesun and Double Olympic Champion Andrei Moiseev managed to overtake him and ended up finishing 1 and 2 respectively with Lesun having 25 victories and 9 defeats with Moiseev being 2 victories behind.

Amro El Geziry (EGY) had a phenomenal swim to beat Tomoya Miguchi (JPN) and Soeng Jin Kim (KOR) by nearly 3 seconds in a time of 1:59,88. 2nd place in the fencing, Moiseev was not far off the pace in 4th position with World #1 Adam Marosi (HUN) in 5th. Fencing Champion Lesun managed 10th position to remain at the top of the leaders board followed by Moiseev. El Geziry's swim moved him up to 3rd position going to the ride.

The riding event proved tough for the athletes, with Hwonho Jung (KOR) who scored 1196 coming the closest to a perfect score with Lesun coming in 2nd position with a solid score of 1180. This gave Lesun a 12 second lead over Moiseev, with El Geziry and Zadneprovskis being a further 13 and 15 seconds back respectively going in the Combined Event.

A strong crowd turned up to see Lesun have a near perfect first shoot to extend his lead, with Moiseev not having as much success. However he still left in 2nd ahead of Zadneprovskis with El Geziry falling well behind. Lesun extended his already massive lead in the first run and had another successful shoot to easily leave first with Zadneprovskis overtaking Moiseev into 2nd position and Svoboda moving up from 10th to leave in 4th position closely followed by Soeng Jin Kim (KOR).

Lesun again came into the shoot 1st and again had no issues to leave with an unattainable lead and breeze to his debut World Cup Gold Medal. There was still a battle for the Silver and Bronze Medals with Zadneprovskis leaving the shoot in 2nd position which he never gave up to claim Silver. Nicola Benedetti (ITA) amazingly came into the final shoot in 3rd after starting in 23rd position, however he cracked under the pressure and had a poor shoot to fall back down the leaders board. Svoboda held his nerve to leave the final shoot in 3rd and hold on for the Bronze Medal ahead of the fast finishing World #3 Ilia Frolov (RUS).

Russia was able to experience the joy of Aleksander Lesun winning gold as the event was aired on live television in Russia.

World Cup #4 was not only about the great competition, it was also a chance for the athletes to practice the new laser technology which will be used in the World Cup Final in Moscow.
