FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LOS ANGELES LEADERS WORK TO SAVE HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS FOR 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
Frank McCourt, Anita DeFrantz and Shawn Hunter Join Student Athletes and Coaches to Announce the “Save our Sports!” Fundraising Drive
WHAT: Facing a $640 million deficit in the 2010-2011 school year, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) instituted a 25% across-the-board budget cut that would effectively reduce funding for coaches and endanger all competitive athletics at LAUSD high schools. When made aware of the cut, LA civic and philanthropic leaders joined together to help raise the $1.3 million necessary to support over 35,000 student athletes in 72 schools across the city. This unprecedented effort and public/private partnership could mean that thousands of students will have the opportunity to play sports next year - and reap the vast benefits that come from participating in athletics.
Anita DeFrantz, President of the LA84 Foundation, along with leaders from sports organizations and private foundations, will provide details and an update on the fundraising campaign at a press conference on Thursday.
