MUNICH 2018 TEAM EMBARKS ON VANCOUVER VOYAGE

Munich 2018 leaves for winter Games with friendship in mind

Munich, February 4, 2010 - Munich 2018 is beginning a journey of friendship, as the Bid Committee members prepare to make their way to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The team will be flying to Vancouver over the next few days, courtesy of Lufthansa, a Munich 2018 TOP sponsor.

Before departing, Willy Bogner, CEO of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee said:

‘We are embarking on a journey of friendship in Vancouver and we are excited to have the opportunity to demonstrate our Bavarian friendliness to the Olympic family. Munich 2018 is also honoured to be attending the IOC Observer Programme; this is a unique chance to learn from the Olympic winter Games, before the IOC decides on the 2018 host city next year. We wish the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee a peaceful, joyful and successful few weeks as host to the Olympic family.’

Munich 2018 will be celebrating its ambassadors’ achievements in German House in Vancouver. Here, Bid Committee members will present their concept and vision for a friendly Games. Munich’s mayor, Christian Ude, and Bavarian Prime Minister Horst Seehofer will also be actively promoting Munich 2018 during the Vancouver Games, which they will be attending from 10-15 February and 19-22 February respectively.

Chair of the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, Olympic legend Katarina Witt, who will also be in Vancouver said:

‘I wish Vancouver 2010 a successful and unforgettable winter Games. The Canadians are tremendous ice sports enthusiasts which is why I have always liked going to Canada. My memories of the winter Games in Calgary are, of course, another reason why the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Canada are something very special to me. I will never forget becoming an Olympic champion for the second time. Sadly, I was never able to experience the Olympic Games in my own country, but I will be doing everything I can to help aspiring German athletes to live that dream in Munich in 2018.’

Munich’s bid to host the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games reflects the region’s enduring affinity with winter sports. The supporting theme of the bid is its meticulous attention to detail on environmental prosperity.

The short distances between the sports venues and the environmentally friendly Olympic Villages in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen have aided a Games concept based on sustainability. Ice sports will be staged in Munich while Alpine events will be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The artificial ice track at Königssee will also be used to host some of the ice sports.

The Munich 2018 Bid Committee has developed a comprehensive environmental concept which is designed to set new standards in the Olympic Movement.
