D-backs Agree To Terms With Stephen Drew

(PHOENIX)—The Arizona Diamondbacks have avoided arbitration and agreed to terms with infielder Stephen Drew on a one-year contract, as announced by D-backs Executive Vice President and General Manager Josh Byrnes. Consistent with team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Drew, 26, hit .261 (139-for-533) with 29 doubles, a career-high 12 triples, 12 home runs and 65 RBI in 135 games last season. Among NL shortstops, he ranked first with 12 triples; fourth with 29 doubles; fifth with a .428 slugging percentage; sixth with 12 home runs, 65 RBI and 49 walks; and eighth with a .261 batting average and .320 on-base percentage; while his .980 fielding percentage ranked fifth. He was one of the hardest hitters to double up, ranking third in the NL with a ratio of 133.3 at-bats per ground-into-double-play, while his 3.6 percent of ground-into-double-plays tied for 10th in the Majors. He batted leadoff 43 times, hitting .301 (55-for-183) with 11 doubles, 6 triples, 7 home runs, 25 RBI, a .352 on-base percentage and .541 slugging percentage.

Over parts of 4 seasons with the D-backs, Drew has batted .270 (512-for-1,896) with 114 doubles, 34 triples, 50 home runs and 215 RBI in 496 career games. In 2008, he posted career-highs in virtually every offensive category en route to the Arizona BBWAA D-backs’ Player of the Year honors. His 23 triples since the beginning of the 2008 season lead the Majors while his 34 triples since 2006, his debut season, rank fifth behind the Yankees’ Curtis Granderson (53), Mets’ Jose Reyes (50), Rays’ Carl Crawford (43) and Phillies’ Jimmy Rollins (43).
