Giants Sign TE Carson Butler

By Michael Eisen

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Giants today signed tight end Carson Butler, who spent time with four different NFL teams during the 2009 season.

Butler, a 6-4, 260-pound product of the University of Michigan, was signed as a rookie free agent on May 1, 2009 by the Green Bay Packers. He was waived by the Packers on July 16 and signed on Aug. 6 by the Detroit Lions.

Butler played in all four of the Lions’ preseason games and finished with four receptions for 58 yards, with a long catch of 24 yards, and a special teams tackle. He was waived by Detroit on Sept. 5, signed to the Lions’ practice squad two days later and cut again on Sept. 29.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Butler to their practice squad on Oct. 29 and waived him on Nov. 3. On Dec. 30, he was signed to the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad. Butler’s contract expired when the Bengals were eliminated from the playoffs.

At Michigan, Butler played in 29 games at tight end before switching to defensive end for his final three games. He had 41 career catches for 429 yards and three touchdowns.

Butler played at Renaissance High School in Detroit.
