Canada's Zina Kocher Finishes Seventeenth at Biathlon World Cup

RUHPOLDING, Ger.—Canada’s Zina Kocher continued to edge her closer towards the top-15 after finishing 17th in a women’s 12.5-kilometre mass start competition on Saturday in Ruhpolding, Germany.
The Red Deer, Alta. native, who was 30th in Thursday’s sprint event, turned in a stronger performance today while posting a time of 43 minutes 29.8 seconds. Kocher missed four shots in her four bouts on the range.
Helena Jonsson, of Sweden, finished on top of a day dominated by the Germans. Jonsson shot clean to stop the clock at 40:58.7.
The German women grabbed the next four spots in the standings. Simon Hauswald won the silver with a time of 41:21.8, while Magdalena Neuner claimed the bronze at 41:33.7.
Jean-Philippe Le Guellec, of Shannon, Que., was the lone Canadian in the men’s 15-kilometre mass start competition. Le Guellec finished 22nd overall with a time of 40:50.9.
Norway’s Emil Hegle Svendsen enjoyed a golden day, clocking-in at 39:19.5. Russia’s Evgeny Ustyugov was second at 29:24.6, while Austria’s Simon Eder finished third with a time of 29::39.4.
The Biathlon World Cup continues on Sunday in Germany with the men’s relay competitions.
