NEW YEAR'S DAY GLOBAL SHOWCASE FOR KEY MUNICH 2018 VENUE
Famous Four Hills Tournament at Garmisch-Partenkirchen Promotes Munich 2018 Olympic Winter Games Bid
Munich, December 29, 2009 - One of Munich’s key venues for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, will showcase its state-of-the-art facilities on New Year’s Day (01/01/2010) when it hosts the world’s leading ski jumpers in the second event of this season’s prestigious Four Hills Tournament.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is proposed to host Alpine and Nordic events for the Munich 2018 Games, has staged the Four Hills event since 1949 and it now regularly attracts over 25,000 spectators with 7.6 Million national TV viewers, underscoring the region’s and Germany’s unparalleled heritage and passion for winter sport.
Willy Bogner, CEO of Munich 2018, said:
“Garmisch-Partenkirchen’s combination of a new, ultra-modern ski-jump facility and Bavaria’s famous friendly hospitality is what attracts so many winter sport enthusiasts each year. We are confident that Garmisch-Partenkirchen is ready for a Munich winter Games in 2018.”
The Bavarian winter sports centre has become a favourite for competitors and fans alike with the new ski-jump run awarded Gold standard by the International Olympic Committee and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities in the IOC/IAKS Awards for 2009.
The Munich 2018 bid team will be hard at work at this “home” event to build on incredibly strong local support by generating national awareness and enthusiasm for the Munich bid.
Munich’s application to host the 2018 winter Games reflects the region’s enduring affinity with winter sports and its focus on protecting the environment in which winter sports are held. The Bid Committee has developed a comprehensive environmental concept which is designed to set new standards for the Games.
The Games concept is based on sustainability and the short distances between innovative sports venues and its environmentally friendly Olympic Villages in Munich and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Ice sport will be staged in Munich while Alpine and Nordic events will be in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In addition the all weather ice track at Koenigssee will be used.
Munich 2018’s full technical plan will be revealed for the first time on March 15th 2010 with the submission of the Applicant City File to the IOC in Lausanne.
