— The Houston Astros announced today that the club has signed
right-handed pitcher Jose Valdez, a minor league free agent, and added him to
the club’s 40-man roster. Houston also announced that the team has
purchased the contracts of right-handed pitchers Evan Englebrook, Matt Nevarez
and Henry Villar, also adding the players to the club’s 40-man roster.
The announcements were made by General Manager Ed Wade.
Valdez, 26, spent last season in the New York Yankees organization, splitting time between Double A Trenton and Triple A Scranton. He spent the majority of the year at Corpus Christi, posting a 2-0 record and a 3.16 ERA (9ER/25.2IP) in 21 games. Englebrook, 6’-8”, was originally selected by the Astros in the eighth round of the 2004 June draft out of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.
Nevarez, 22, went 2-4 with 13 saves and compiled a 2.28 ERA (11ER/43.1IP) in 42 appearances combined with Class A Hickory and Class A Lexington in 2009. Nevarez, along with infielder Jose Vallejo, was acquired on August 18, 2009, from Texas in exchange for catcher Ivan Rodriguez. After his acquisition, Nevarez appeared in eight games for Lexington, tossing 8.1 shutout innings. He was originally selected by the Rangers in the 10th round of the 2005 June draft.
Villar, 22, made 43 appearances, including three starts, for Lexington this season, posting a 3-4 record with five saves and a 2.60 ERA (26ER/90IP).
