FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sir Craig Reedie Elected to IOC Executive Board
A member of the IOC since 1994, Reedie polled 52 votes in the final round of voting and will serve for a four year term.
Former
British Olympic Association (BOA) Chairman Sir Craig Reedie was today
elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board at
the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark.
A member of the IOC since 1994, Reedie polled 52 votes in the final round of voting and will serve for a four year term.
Reedie becomes the first Briton to be elected on to the IOC’s Executive Board since 1961, when Olympic hurdler Lord Burghley was the last Briton to hold a seat.
Commenting on Sir Craig Reedie’s election as a member of the IOC Executive Board, BOA Chairman Colin Moynihan said:
“I
am delighted for Craig Reedie. This will give London a strong voice at
the heart of the Olympic Movement in the run-up to 2012.”
Following his election Sir Craig Reedie said:
“I always thought there was a good chance of doing this. This year, in the build up to London, was the right time to maintain the splendid relationships that exist between the Organising Committee and the IOC.”
Reflecting on the city of Copenhagen being the setting for his election he added, “I have a great fondness for this city because I have been coming here for forty years to play or administer badminton, so it is a real thrill to have this honour conferred here.”
Reedie will travel to the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland for his first Executive Board meeting in December this year.
Earlier the members of the IOC re-elected IOC President Jacques Rogge by an 88-1 vote at the close of the 121st IOC Session.
After
thanking the IOC members for their continued support, Rogge outlined an
ambitious second-term agenda to strengthen and improve the Olympic
Movement.
“We have much more to do,” he told his colleagues.
Rogge said one of his top priorities is to implement the
recommendations of the recently completed XIII Olympic Congress. He
also emphasised the importance of the new Youth Olympic Games, which
will debut in Singapore in August, followed by the Youth Winter Olympic
Games in Innsbruck in 2012.
“We will take this initiative from infancy to maturity and leave a lasting legacy for the world’s youth,” he said.
“We
will continue to support National Olympic Committees and the
International Federations, and we will defend the autonomy of sport
wherever it is threatened,” he added.
