U.S. ELIMINATED ON FINAL DAY OF GROUP PLAY AT 2009 FIFA U-20 WORLD CUP
U.S. Barely Misses Out on Advancing to Round of 16
SUEZ, Egypt (Oct. 3, 2009) - The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team
was eliminated from the FIFA U-20 World Cup this
afternoon after the final group matches were completed in Egypt. The
U.S. finished as the 17th place team in the tournament, one place shy
of the Round of 16.
After finishing the group phase with three points and a minus three
goal differential after a win against Cameroon and losses to Germany
and Korea Republic, the U.S. needed certain results in Group E today to
go their way.
With Brazil defeating
Australia, U.S. head coach Thomas Rongen’s side only needed the Czech
Republic to beat CONCACAF Champion Costa Rica by shutout or at least
two goals to advance, but Czech Republic only won the match by a
one-goal margin, 3-2. Due to the result, the U.S. and Costa Rica tied
with minus three goal difference, but Costa Rica will advance with five
goals scored compared to the USA’s four.
It is the first time that the U.S. team has failed to advance past the group stage at the U-20 World Cup since 1987.
The players will depart Suez on Monday, and return to their respective club and college teams.
